WHAT OTHER CITIES CAN LEARN FROM FORT WORTH’S REAL-TIME FLOOD WARNING SYSTEM

Floods Don’t Wait. Neither Should You.
As the number of extreme weather events and associated damages increases across the U.S., local governments are assessing how they should invest in storm drain infrastructure and real-time flood warning.
Flooding, in particular, is becoming one of the most pressing public safety challenges of our time as we experience more frequent, intense rainfall events, rapid urbanization with population growth, and aging infrastructure.
The flood warning experience in Fort Worth, Texas, offers a compelling example of what is possible when a city takes an innovative and data-driven approach to flood monitoring and response.
Fort Worth continues to invest in long-term capital improvement projects to relieve flooding while investing in hydrology and hydraulic modeling for floodplain management and flood warning.
The city has built a real-time flood warning system (“last line of defense against flooding”) that is being enhanced for better situational awareness for motorists and ultimately helps protect both people and infrastructure by providing timely warnings.
While every community’s geography, climate, and resources differ, the principles behind Fort Worth’s success can be adapted to meet a wide variety of local needs. Download the guide to read more and explore how your community can adopt similar strategies to strengthen resilience and reduce flood risk.
