Sawyer County Master Plan

Sawyer County, WI

Sawyer County Airport (HYR) is a public-use general aviation facility serving the Hayward area, Sawyer County, and the greater Northwoods region of the state. The airport provides access for private pilots, charter services, and recreational flyers, supporting a variety of aviation activities including business travel, tourism, and flight training. With a primary asphalt runway capable of accommodating a range of aircraft and a secondary turf runway for seasonal operations, Sawyer County Airport plays an important role in connecting the Hayward community to destinations across Wisconsin and the Midwest.

The airport’s master plan thoroughly evaluated the airport and local/regional aviation trends and provided recommendations for the development and modernization of the airport to meet demand. The plan also considered potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts and evaluated elements such as airfield configuration, facility development, on-airport land use, and support facilities. Key outcomes of the study include:

  • Extension and relocation of Runway 3-21 to accommodate FAA airport design standards and allow for greater utilization by larger business jet aircraft
  • Reposition of the localizer, glideslope, visual approach aids, and the approach lighting system to serve relocated Runway 3-21
  • Maintenance of existing GPS instrument approach procedures and potential reduction of instrument approach capabilities to less than ¾-mile to increase operational capacity
  • Construction of a larger terminal building and snow removal equipment facility to accommodate increases in transient passengers and provide greater operational efficiency
  • Identification of new hangar and apron sites to support on-airport businesses and provide additional aircraft storage capacity
