UTSA San Pedro I

Pape-Dawson provided civil engineering and archaeological services for the six-story School for Data Science/National Security Collaboration Center (SDS/NSCC) facility in downtown San Antonio, also known as San Pedro I. The facility includes 86,000 SF of classroom, laboratory, and research space and houses the university’s data intelligence and cybersecurity programs.

Because the project is in a historic part of the City, Pape-Dawson’s archeology team conducted a data recovery of SAL-eligible portions of site 41BX795. Following the results of an initial survey investigation by Pape-Dawson, the archeology team undertook mitigation efforts targeting Spanish Colonial to Republic of Texas deposits at site 41BX795 under Permit No. 30022. The investigation consisted of mechanical excavation of two archeological trenches, the hand-excavation of 13 1 x 1-meter units, and 14 50 x 50-centimeter column samples, and mechanical scraping to ascertain the presence of additional Spanish Colonial features across a roughly 800-square meter area. In total, more than 54 archeological features were recorded spanning from the Spanish Colonial period through the early-twentieth century. The excavations were documented using a DJI Matrice 600 Pro Drone to capture high-resolution and high-accuracy geo-spatial photographs of the site and create an orthomosaic illustrating various occupation surfaces. This project is designed to meet LEED Silver requirements.

We designed site improvements, including grading, drainage, and utilities to serve the facility. The team coordinated with subsurface utility engineering (SUE) consultants to locate utilities potentially impacted by construction as well as provide service to the building. The project has a limited footprint; therefore, site grading was needed to maintain connections with adjacent public roads for emergency access paths, ADA accessible routes, and connections to existing pedestrian walkways, including the San Pedro Creek Culture Park.
