US 281 Superstreet

To help alleviate traffic congestion on the US 281 corridor north of LP 1604 in San Antonio, Pape-Dawson analyzed the viability of implementing the Superstreet concept, an innovative solution to ease congestion and reduce travel time.

Pape-Dawson worked with partners and the community to gain consensus on the project, provided full PS&E, obtained environmental permits, and prepared a geological assessment and water pollution abatement plan.

As the first of its kind in Texas, the Superstreet removed left-turn and through traffic from side streets and moved those vehicles downstream to turnarounds, saving drivers approximately $19.9M in the first year of operation and $99M over 5 years.

This project received a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies at the 2011 Engineering Excellence competition.
