Sitting on 10 acres previously developed as a hillside student parking lot, the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence (RACE) serves a critical role promoting the academic success, health, wellness, and performance of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) student athletes; and further provides national recognition to UTSA as it prepares to move to the American Athletic Conference. The 95,000-SF building includes staff and coaches’ offices, meeting rooms, student athlete academic spaces, locker rooms, a sports medicine center, a nutrition center, strength and conditioning facilities, and football practice fields.
Pape-Dawson Engineers performed surveying, environmental, and civil engineering site improvement design for drainage, water and sanitary sewer service connections, emergency access paths and fire code compliance, and connections of pedestrian walkways from the facility to the surrounding pedestrian paths. As the RACE facility is in the center of the UTSA main campus, Pape-Dawson successfully navigated environmental and contextual issues within an active college campus and executed the project plan efficiently and effectively to deliver the project in a manner that allows UTSA to meet its developmental and growth goals.
This project received the silver medal for the 2023 American Council of Engineering Companies Texas Engineering Excellence: Special Projects category.
